Chapter 33

Lieutenant Trokic stared at the dead man in the doorway between the kitchen and the living room—just a few yards away. Was it supposed to be him lying there? It could have been him. Something told him he was meant to see the wasps spread all over his floor and understand something. Frandsen showing up instead of him was a tragic and terrifying accident.

The look on Frandsen's face was peaceful despite the horror he must have endured in the last minutes of his life. He was lying halfway on his stomach with one leg tucked under, and his head turned to one side. A small drop of blood had spilled from the corner of his slightly open mouth onto the wooden floor. His hands lay limply by his side.

It was a sad sight. Frandsen had been in his late thirties, with black hair and a big nose, and his great sense of humor had made him a popular partner on patrols. Trokic knew that he had just returned from paternity leave after his wife gave birth to their second child a few weeks earlier. Frandsen had stopped by the homicide department and showed pictures of his tiny son on a light blue blanket. Now, the whole world had collapsed around his wife and children. And it was Trokic's fault for some reason he didn't understand.

The resemblance between Frandsen and Trokic was by no means striking, but in dim light, you could be mistaken by the black hair, especially if the killer expected Trokic. For a moment, he imagined himself lying there on the floor, lifeless and free from pain. What would his colleagues have said? Would any of them be sad?

Beside Frandsen's body, a pathologist unknown to Trokic was measuring the temperature in the victim's ear. He wanted to ask where Dr. Torben Bach was and why they had sent a young, inexperienced pathologist instead, but he swallowed his words. The case was obvious. Next to him, Jan, the technician, was collecting samples from the floor.

“This is a goddamn tragedy,” Jan muttered. “He was such a nice guy. I could kill the bastard who did this.”

“We'll get him sooner or later,” Trokic promised. “And now, he screwed up.”

“The patrol officers already talked to the neighbors. Nobody saw or heard anything.”

“He's a ghost,” Trokic said.

He pictured Frandsen's face when he had given him the task—a flash of irritation because he was sent off on an assignment just as he was leaving the station for the rest of the day.

“The cause of death is blood loss from multiple stab wounds,” the pathologist said. “It looks like he got the first stab in his back. Then, he probably fell to his knees and ended up on his stomach, and then received several stab wounds to his neck and lower back. A lot of force and anger were put into it. He bled quite a lot before he died.”

Jan added, “I don't think this was a burglar. The patio door was still open. A burglar could have turned around and fled.
